Tru Calling, continued

Posted on 2005.05.10 at 15:45
In response to some questions:

It's been asked how the aims of the two warring Fates are conveyed to the humans doing their work -- would we have seen these powers, as one did on Buffy, for instance?

Probably not, or at least, not blatantly. Remember that Buffy was a very different kind of show, where green-skinned demons could routinely sit around enjoying very dry martinis and contemplating their Sinatra collections. I hesitate to use the word "realistic" about a show in which dead bodies talk to the heroine, but tonally Tru Calling was much closer to life as we see it daily. Once the tone for a show has been established, it's hard to break without losing the audience.

That being said, one can massage tone from time to time; and one thing I'd hoped to do further down the road in the second season was suggest that for Tru -- perhaps because of her double parentage -- the border between life and death had worn thin. In some time of great emotional distress, when she's questioning everything, she might have a dream in which her mother talks with her directly; or she might sit, exhausted, at a lonely bus stop and get into a conversation with some stranger that ends up touching on what's been troubling her. Only later is it implied that the stranger was dead, and possibly someone with a special interest in her -- perhaps a friend of her mother's, perhaps someone who had the power before her -- who knows. It was just a moment I thought might be interesting to get to, partly because we eventually needed to see Tru question what she’s doing.

So if the Fates aren't going to be giving Tru or Jack specific orders, how do they know what to do? With Tru this question isn't so difficult; even if you have no special knowledge, if you discover you can save people's lives, you're probably going to do it. I know I would, and really, it's what every hero in a "do-over" sort of story does -- look at Gary Hobson of Early Edition, or Sam Beckett of Quantum Leap. It's all very well for the crew of the Enterprise to agonize over "changing the past," but they're already far in the future (from our point of view) and are themselves the direct product of that past timeline. They can say, "We've got a nice little Federation of Planets thing going on here; why mess with it?" In Tru's world, you're changing a future you don't know to another future you don't know; and along the way you save a life, so why not? It's hard to stand by and let someone get killed.

What's more problematic is Jack; if he had no special knowledge, why would he assume that saving lives is a bad thing? The answer is, he does have special knowledge. Not of the future timeline (at least not specifically); but he has access to the knowledge his predecessors have passed down since the first ones got their marching orders. And he had a Near Death Experience with some special moments.

Remember I suggested that there was a qualitative difference between the power that laid out humanity's grand plan, and the rebellious power that wants to change that plan. The former is more authoritarian in the way it deals with humans, while the latter gives individuals the choice to cooperate or not. Just as the latter offers selected people the opportunity to ask for help, it gave Tru her gift as a gift. Jack, on the other hand, was clinically dead. In his NDE, he came face to face with something he can't entirely remember -- but he was told that if he were returned to life, he'd be working for them.

(Which brings us to the question: if Jack was given his life back as payment for services to be rendered, what happens if he ever decides he doesn't want to render those services? And yes, that was going to be an exploration for a later part of the arc.)

Once he revived, he wasn't sure what to make of all this. And then his day started rewinding -- whenever Tru's did, though he didn't realize this yet. He ended up in a psych ward. And that's where Tru's father found him. He'd been waiting for someone like Jack to appear, and mental hospitals were a prime hunting ground. When someone showed up talking about re-living days, he knew he'd found his man. So he went to Jack and said, "I know exactly what you're going through -- " (and he could describe it, exactly) "--and I know what happened when you were clinically dead. And I know a lot of other things you'll need to know, so I suggest you listen to me."

Through Tru's father, Jack has access to the knowledge of generations of his predecessors. Tru's mother should have been her mentor, but she died when Tru was too young, and anything she'd written down was confiscated by her husband.

And in answer to another question: No, I don't think that the champions of both types of Fate routinely married each other. That would be rather giving the game away.

Oh, and as for the power Tru works for -- the fact that they're more oriented toward individual freedom may cause you to think their plan is the one we'd want to have play out. But I wouldn't bet the entire future of the human race on the fact that they seem polite.

the best

I really enjoyed watching tru calling. It was fresh and different. I think you did a great job and good luck writing for house lets hope fox doesn't give it the ax!! I myself have a show in the early stages...trust me when i say early, actually it's in my notebook...i have three little scripts, character names and outlines aswell as plot and mythology. Maybe someday in the not so distant future it will be seen!

This is true, but many people when faced with the choice of free will vs. determinism will take sucky free will over pretty-good determinism. Also, Tru is cuter than Jack so her power wins. ;)

Do you think the second season might be released on DVD? Those of us in the San Francisco area didn't get to see all the ones shown elsewhere (pre-empted for baseball games).

questions I don't expect answers to because there might be another part that goes over these:

1. So Tru's Father died?

2. Does the power run out at a certain age? Or did Tru's father lose his when he killed her mom?

3. Why is it on some eps she can "lose" and on others they keep asking?

4. You had said before that Jack's fates had a plan for the universe.....and then there was another force that rebelled. And one of the sides would end up with the earth a pile of rubble (maybe). Are you insinuating that Jack's fates may WANT the pile of rubble, or that even though they have a plan, it doesn't mean they know enough to KNOW that it will end up properly and happy?

5. Is it only their city that matters? Or are there other..."Called" around the world?

Thank you so much for doing this. Jack really turned around the show for me. The addition of hte mythology, for me, hooked me, and it really pissed me off that there was this seemingly interesting concept that would never be revealed! (Similar to Oddessey 5)

I love the "greyness" of the mythology. It almost can't be revealed which side is correct unless the world was set to end withing a few seasons :) If the show had continued I could have gotten into some WONDERFUL arguments with fans over who's right, or if either is.

Of course, then I would come up with oddball theories like there is an even MORE powerful fate controlling Jack and Tru's forces and putting them against each other EITHER as a game to see who would win OR because it's apart of THEIR plan.....and the only way their plan can work is if tru wins sometimes and jack others.....

fates work in mysterious ways...

Thanks so much for writing this! Any chance of posting the scripts you were working on? Can't wait to read part 3...(holding breath)

....

The second season of Tru Calling will be out August 2. You can pre-order it at Best Buy's website. I personally loved the second season arc. Those last 6 episodes are the best of the series IMO. It's a shame we'll never get to see where it was headed. Damn Fox. I'm less pissed about the cancellation that the fact that they elected for a second season, got our hopes up and then changed their minds. Atleast there's "House" which I think is probably my favorite show of the season next to "Veronica Mars".

Thank you for posting both those messages.

Also, I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but is there any chance you could tell us what was going to happen in the next few episodes?

Thanks, and good luck with current and future shows :), hopefully they'll get better treatment than Tru.

Thanks for this. Tru was a show with a lot of potential in S1 that was definitely realizing it in S2. It will be missed.

Thanks a bunch!

I absolutely love Tru Calling and am very happy that you did this for us fans. I am still mad that the show got cut. That Point Pleasant show that took its place absolutely sucked. I have season one of Tru Calling and was hoping to add to my collection. How sad! I would so love it if Fox would keep going past the six episodes even though you have given away a lot of info. I would still like to actually see it! I do love House and 24 and am going to be equally pissed if they cut them too. I am starting to wonder if I should even start watching shows on Fox as it seems like many get cut too early.

off topic...

24 isn't going to be be cancelled, although if the rumors are true then it might be making a network switch if NBC has anything to do with it. I'd be willing to bet that without any break out hits this season (besides House) Fox will shell out the dough to keep it. House isn't going anywhere either. It's a huge hit for Fox at the moment, although when it comes back next season there won't be an American Idol lead in (atleast not right away) so who knows how it will fare. Hopefully, the audience will follow it regardless.

Wow. Reading this just annoys me even more. The show had a definite direction, and it sounds like it was just going to better and better.

Jack intrigued me to no end (especially his reaction to letting that girl drop from the building, and his telling her that he wasn't "strong enough"), so you mentioning that later on in the series he was going to start questioning his own 'calling'? Well it makes me sad that we're never going to get to explore that storyline.

I hope you keep writing these entries, they make the sting of losing the show a little less =)

about that episode

i know this post is form a couple years back but it's newly discovered by me. I just wanted to say that that ep. with Jack and the girl (sorry I suck with names) nearly killed me. I was hysterically in tears. I really did think he was going to save her or let tru or something. I don't know if that makes me a stupid sap or what but there it is.

Reading this is really, really cool. I'm working on the Tru Calling virtual continuation, so I'm sure that the information will prove useful. Thanks for taking the time to answer the fan's questions. While we're on the subject, I have a few of my own...

1. How is it that the calling is passed along from person to person? You said that Jack got the calling when he had his NDE, but when/how did Tru's father stop having it? As far as I know, Tru's mom had it until her death -- did Tru's father stop having it when her mom died? Also, why did Tru start having the calling when she did? Was it just because she'd never been around dead people before her first night at the morgue?

2. You said you had an arc planned in which Tru would learn the consequences of saving someone who didn't ask for help (specifically, Jensen). Obviously, the "deja vu" was part of that plan. What was the arc going to consist of?

3. What was the plan with Carrie? We never really got a full idea of what you guys had in store for her. How did she know Jack, etc.?

Again, thanks for reaching out to the fans. We all loved the show, and it's great to see that the staff cared about it enough to try to keep it alive in what small ways they can.

Cancelation

is there anyway you could take this show to another station? Why isn't Fox seeling the uncut version of season two, seeing as there are only 6 episodes in the cut down version? why was the show cancelec? everyone here loves it and it deffinently beats all those dumb reality shows like "meet your new mommy" or whatever. Isn't there anyway another station can take this show on? I NEED this show, it is my uplifting everyweek. I already own season one in DVD, but only six episodes in season 2 just isnt dointg it for me. I don't understand why they canceled it. Is there any chance at all of it coming back? If there is anything viewers can do to get it back, be sure to let us know

I am so glad I found your journal! This was my favorite show on and I have been waiting and even taking off from work every thursday night so I wouldn't miss the next episodes but I didn't see any for a while so I decided to research and find out when it would come back on and find out its canceled! I am such a loser I almost cried when I found out! I really hope there is something we can do about it! I am sorry if you hate getting all these comments on your journal.

Fox Makes me so Angry...

Can you tell me if Tru Calling will be back on and when. I wish another station would air it, Fox seems to be too stupid to understand that people like myself and my room mate love Tru Calling. They seem to think that the only shows are those dumb "Reality" Shows, which by the way aren't fooling anyone, they are so staged and stupid I would rather no watch the t.v. They didn't even tell us they were not going to show it anymore or give a final episode. We waited for months for it to come back and then have it taken away again. I would like to know who decides what is good and what isn't because they don't have enough brain capacity to make a good decision.

Please tell me what is going on with my favorite show... You see we only watch a little tv now, because there is so much crap on tv. After Buffy and Angel went down, we thought great now what will we watch, then came along Tru Calling and we knew we had to give it a try, we loved it right off the back and we always couldn't wait until Thursday night to watch it. FOX owes us an explaination or at least a final episode if they are gonna take it off again. Please help us...

Thanks

Thank you for writing...everything. I've been purusing your lj and love the tips and inspiration you give to young writers. Makes me want to pick up the proverbial pen and work on some fan fiction. Or actually try to write something real next time.

And, let's not forget the wonderful information you've posted about Tru. It is an amazing show, and Fox is and always has been too busy with their heads up their ass to pay attention to the important, different shows (TXF nonwithstanding...although I suppose Millennium is another one, but it only lasted 3 years I believe).

Thanks again. I'll keep reading. And maybe writing.

Re: Thanks

This is redundunt, but thanks. Can't wait until part 3. Can you please explain what would have happened with the character of Jensen?

Thank You

Thanks so much for posting both these messages about Tru Calling.

Although nothing can ever really make up for the show not being concluded properly, this really does go a long way towards it. That you would take the time out of your schedule to do this means a great deal to me and, as I am sure you have seen from the other comments here, many other fans of the show.

I hope that you will be posting more and, if it was determined before the proverbial axe fell, letting us in on just exactly what was happening with Jensen after Tru saved his life.

Thank you once again.

Re: Anything?

Thank you so much for taking your time to share this with us fans! Do you know why Fox cancelled the show? I mean, from what you've told us the show was going to get even more amazing than it already was, so why would they get rid of it?

Anyway, as some other people said, is there anything we can do to get Fox or any other network to pick it up for a few more seasons? (or even 1 more? lol) Tru Calling is pretty much the only show I watch so what could be done? Would tons of fans bombarding Fox or another network with emails help? Or perhaps an online petition? Or any other ideas. If you know of any I'll check back for an answer in your lj ~Ali, aka tAikenByClayton

I just wanted to add my voice (words) to the others that have thanked you for sharing this information with the fans.

I was just wondering if you are working on a new show now that you'd recommend watching.

First of all, let me just say thank you for posting these journals with so much information. It is unusual for me to follow a television show so closely, but I found Tru Calling to be fascinating and I was extremely disappointed when the show was canceled. I was left wanting to know so much more and I was thrilled to discover your journal postings. I hope you will be posting more of them, and I will look forward to reading them. Along the lines of mythology, I was wondering if there is any significance in the fact that it seems that females (Tru and her mother) are working for one side of "Fate" while males (Jack and Tru's father) are working for the other side. Because of their genders, does that determine which side of fate the chosen people are working for? This is a question I have been asking for a while now and was wondering if there was any answer. Thank you again for your writings.
(Anonymous) at 2005-07-25 23:39 (UTC) (Link)
Hi! Thank you so much for the info. Me and my roommates watched Tru faithfully. We were so mad when FOX pulled the rug out from under us like they did.

They are thrilled with the info btw. I am too, but I have a question about my favorite character: please, please, please tell me Davis got some common sense and kicked traitorous Carrie to the curb.

Tru and Jack

If Tru Calling had gone on, I was wondering, would Tru and Jack have had a relationship? It sounds kind of weird, but it could have been cool. Oh yeah, I hate Fox. Stupid cool-show-cancelling retards.

I'm horribly late in posting this comment, I know, and I apologise for it. I'm from Belgium and they've only started broadcasting Tru Calling here last week, which is why I'm a bit tardy :)

I just wanted to say, just like everyone else who's posted, thank you for posting this information.

I've only seen one ep, up until now (I'm impatiently waiting for the second, at the moment), but I really liked what I saw. From what I've read, it seems as if this show was going to be one of the best around. You had a wonderful plotline ready.

A Few Questions

Hi Ms. Egan,

I have a few questions (of course I do, right?): some of them have to do with occurrences in the show that seem contradictory/unanswered, and others are just questions regarding the mythology of the show. I'll try to number them in order of how much I need/want to know the answer :)

1) First and foremost, how did Tru's father lose his "rewinder" ability?
2) Does one have to have a NDE in order to have the piggy-back rewinder ability (like Tru's dad and Jack)?
3) How is the gap between Tru's mother's death and Tru being "called" (and the possible gap between Tru's father's loss of ability and the "calling" of Jack) explained? In other words, at any given point in time, is there always someone working for either side?
4) Are there others who are "called" around the world?
5) Who determines which cadavers can ask for help and when? Does the rebellious power sometimes get away from under the control of the first power and let people slip through to ask for help from time to time? But if that were the case, it would seemingly contradict "The Longest Day," in which there appears to be a power who knows what it wants to happen...?
6) In my understanding thus far, one power created the grand plan, and now there are two competing powers (one backing Tru, and the other backing Jack) trying to alter/preserve that plan. Is it possible that the power backing Jack doesn't categorically know that the grand plan will lead to the "best" fate (ignoring the fact that we don't necessarily know who the "best" fate is best for)?
7) What are the consequences of someone who didn't ask for help (e.g. Jensen)?
8) I noticed that Tru is never asked for help from the same person; in "The Longest Day," she is asked for help from a new victim each time. If at some point she knew that she couldn't prevent the death of the person she was supposed to save, then if she could set up a way that the person's death caused an extra death, could she get another chance and save them both? Meaning, if Abby dies on Day 1, and Abby isn't saved on Day 2, could Tru set up Brian to be killed with Abby on Day 2, and then wait for Brian to ask her for help at the end of Day 2, thereby earning a second chance to save both Abby and Brian? By extension, I guess I'm also asking: if, in the course of reliving the day, Tru causes the death of an extra person, is there a guarantee that fate will rewind the day a second time so the "extra person" doesn't die?

Now I'm going to be slightly gushy, like every other fan...
In "Last Good Day," I was really hoping that Jack would take the better side of his ambiguous "instructions." I was definitely not expecting Jensen to be allowed to live at the end of "Enough," because I felt as though Tru was breaking the rules, saving people that didn't "want/need" saving. And lastly, in "'Twas The Night Before Christmas...Again," I was hoping that everyone would regain vital knowledge in favor of Tru, just as in "Rear Window."

Finally...
I just had a thought. I wonder what would happen if Jack died and asked her for help....

Thank you so much for reading this,
-Zek

Tru Calling

Thank you! Now I can sleep at night lol I couldn't stop thinking about the show. It really pissed me off that it got cancelled especially since everyone worked so hard on it. People just don't know real entertainment. I just want you to know that I never missed an aired episode and I bought the DVDs. In 2005 I hoped that my contributing would make the show stay cuz it worked season 1 of Buffy in 1997 but I guess we can't win em all. But seriously, thank you for telling me where the show was suppossed to go. It means alot to me and all the other fans out there. I love you Eliza!
[info]jlbarnett at 2008-12-20 15:32 (UTC) (Link)
I suppose you may have covered it, since this is real old, but this warring fates thing was happening, then how come Tru couldn't counter with: "If things can be changed how do you know I'm not fixing what went wrong? For all we know they weren't supposed to die and I'm correcting that?"

I'm asking this as someone who's more interested in the mechanics of the show than the show itself.

Also, I hope this doesn't sound rude, butcan I get your opinion on why so many writers seem to want to write shows where in the end it turns out the hero may be a dupe for some malicious power? I've heard several proposals like that, but I don't think one of those shows has ever survived to the big reveal
